Bible Verses about Sin

Introduction to what the Bible says about Sin

These Bible verses about sin reveal that everyone has sinned and that there is nothing we can do by ourselves to earn forgiveness. We cannot stop sinning and no number of good deeds we perform can ever erase them.

Throughout the history of the world, humankind has always chosen to disobey God and to act selfishly, following our own thoughts and feelings rather than the will of God. Selfishness has become a natural instinct for us and by behaving in this way we have rejected God and created a chasm between Him and us so wide that it can only be crossed by God alone.

This is the terrible situation we are in. Each of us is guilty of sin and without divine intervention there is no other way than down—we can only go from bad to worse. But the good news is that, even before we were created, our loving God knew what each one of us would be like and so He always had a plan to bring us back.

Bible verses about sinning.

Our Father wants to save us from our sins and live an abundant Christian life as His children and so He sent His very own Son, Jesus, to save us.

The reason Jesus came to earth was to pay the punishment that was necessary for our sins and to free us from them. God, the ultimate Judge of us all, is righteous and pure by His very nature and so He cannot, in His justice, tolerate sin. Happily, through who Jesus is and by accepting what Christ has done for us, we can all be forgiven of our trespasses.

Book of Bible verses logoThe following letter is based on the fourth chapter of the Christian book Letters from Home, Our Father’s Message of Love and is called Your disobedient condition. Composed of paraphrased Bible quotes about sin, it not only shows us how we have all sinned, but also explains why this world is not perfect—the way God initially created it— but why there is sin, pain and suffering in the world. More importantly, these Scripture verses about sin show us that God understands us completely and has a plan to save us.

Bible verses about

This world has turned away from me.[1] I reared children and brought them up, but everyone has turned against me.[2] I was their Father, the very one who made them. But you have all acted corruptly towards me; to your shame you are no longer my children, but a warped and deceitful generation.[3] If you say you have no sin, you lie to yourselves,[4] everything you do seems right in your eyes, but I know your motives.[5]

You no longer know how to do right.[6] You do not understand what you do, for when you want to do right, you do not do it.[7] Even if you have the desire to do good, you are not able.[8] Indeed, the spirit may be willing, but your body is weak.[9] The whole world has become a prisoner of sin,[10] and those who are controlled by their sinful natures cannot please me.[11]

By your own free will, you have gone astray; each of you has turned to their own way.[12] You have all fallen short of my glory.[13] Even from your very birth, you tell lies and do not follow me.[14] People are boastful, proud, abusive, ungrateful, unholy, disobedient to their parents and are lovers of themselves and of money.[15] You have all lived like this at one time, gratifying your cravings and following selfish motives,[16] but I cannot stand these things.[17] Even so, I gave you over to your shameful lusts[18] and let every nation of people go their own way.[19] Everyone has stuffed themselves more than enough, for I have given you what you craved.[20]

People have not even thought it worthwhile to keep hold of any knowledge of me, so I gave you all over to a depraved mind.[21] You have a darkened understanding; you are separated from my life because of your ignorance,[22] separated by your sins,[23] by the hardening of your hearts.[24] People go from bad to worse, deceiving others and deceiving themselves.[25] Having lost their sensitivity, people surrender to sensuality, with a continual lust for more.[26]

Although people know what is right and wrong, they not only do wrong but also approve of others who sin.[27] People are dead in their sins.[28] Nothing good lives in your sinful nature, for you may desire to do good, but you cannot go through with it.[29] The evil things you do delude and entrap you, the cords of your sin hold you captive.[30] This mind of sinful people is hostile to me and death to them, but the Spirit-filled mind is life and peace.[31] The mind of the sinful person is controlled by the desires of the sinful nature, but the Spirit-filled mind is set on the Spirit’s desires.[32]

I hate it when you plot against your neighbour and love to tell lies.[33] Love does no harm to anyone, therefore love is the fulfilment of the law.[34] My law is perfect.[35] I will judge every deed, everything hidden, whether it is good or bad[36] and those who reject the truth and are self-seeking will bear my anger.[37]

In the past, I overlooked everyone’s ignorance, but now I command everyone to turn back to me.[38] Although my eyes are too pure to look on evil,[39] my arm is not too short to save you.[40] Because of the great love I have for you, you can be saved.[41] Because I love you all so much, I gave my one and only Son.[42] I have demonstrated my love for you by the fact that while you were still sinning, Jesus died for you.[43] He came that you may have life and have it more abundantly;[44] if you but believe in him you shall not perish but have everlasting life[45] and sin shall no longer be your master.[46]

I am your King, your Lawgiver and your Judge; it is I who will save you.[47]
